Day Hikes from the River: A Guide to 100 Hikes from Camps on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Vishnu Temple Press (July, 2002)
Average review score:

2nd better than 1stThe second edition of Day Hikes From The River is great! The maps are the biggest change. Though still packed with the same info (and more), the clarity really helps. Thanks Tom for doing this. We used Day Hikes to hike up Vishnu Creek and Kanab Creek to Whispering Falls. Worked great! The resource tips were helpful and not too overbearing. This book is getting real close to a real river guide. The other "guides" give river miles and that's about it. This book ties it all together. I'd sure recommend it for anyone headed down Big Red. The only drawback is that this book is NOT waterproof! I learned the hard way....
Day Hikes is the best!We just finished the river trip of our dreams. 18 days to Diamond Creek, my buddy Jim waited 12 years to get his permit. Day Hikes from the River was a must book to have on our trip! We stopped at "Shiver Grotto", Nautiloid Canyon, Nankoweep, Clear Creek, got water at Phantom (easy to find), Shinumo, Elves Chasm, Stone Creek, managed the Thunder River-Deer Creek loop, got aced out at Havasu and thanks to Day Hikes, and had a great time at Tuckup. What a resource. The maps are really clear, and the easy to follow directions made it all work out. Thanks for the great guide!

Dealer's Choice (Wild Cards, Vol 11)
Published in Paperback by Spectra (November, 1992)
Average review score:

best book in the series...Two words for you: Rox War. This book is my absolute favorite in the series. Eight years after reading it, the events in this book are the ones I remember best from the series. I was completely captivated with this book and I couldn't put it down. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone interested in the Wild Cards.
Great book. The story is terrificThe book is one of the best stories ever read. When I first read it, i'd only read 2 others(joker's wild, and ace in the hole). Even though I knew little about what was going on, the story answered most of my questions.

Dear Dr. King: Letters from Today's Children to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Published in Paperback by Jump at the Sun (January, 1900)
Average review score:

A really great bookI was one of the kids who wrote letters for the book 4 years ago, and it was an amazing thing to me to be a "published author." A lot of my friends got to read their letters on Oprah and other TV shows. I really enjoyed reading my copy of this book. I would definitely recommend it to everyone, child and adult.
A real winner.Saw the book featured on Oprah's show on Martin Luther King, Jr., and bought it. Have bought three more for all grandchildren. Touching, funny, revealing and very well designed. Every kid, of any age, should have one.

Death of an Evangelista

Allana was my high school journalism teacher.Allana was my high school journalism teacher when she taught at Fort Worth Paschal High School in 1971 so I think you ought to buy several copies of this book.
More than a good mysteryOne of those rare books that is a good mystery and a good novel. Not a 'cozy' but basically traditional. Reminds me of Sue Grafton. Complex characters, fascinating background (Te-Mex border)but still a good read. Ending a bit weird. My first exposure to this author, and I will definitely read the others in this series.

Debugging Perl: Troubleshooting for Programmers
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (02 October, 2000)
Average review score:

You need this before you meet the "real world"Very good. Author isn't only describing "how to debug Perl programs" but he's
mainly concerned in "how to write Perl programs that you won't need to debug" - this
sounds better, right ? A "hands-on" developer experience brought by someone who obviously
stepped on most of errors people may step and trying to warn you before you're doing
the same.
If "Programming Perl" is about "Perl", this book is about "real-world-Perl" and .. hey ..
those things aren't the same, as you should know (you *will* after reading the book).
Thank you, Martin !

It's about time...After a countless number of Perl books have been published, not much has been published like this book. The Learning Perl books are great, but learning the syntax isn't always the needed information to programmers. This book is different in that it focuses on some of the quirky odd things that you may run into programming. After designing in Perl for 3 years, I still run into times the code does not work the way I thought it would (maybe from thinking in C, Java, etc terms) and need a book of quirks instead a book of syntax. Finally, a book about how Perl behaves (or misbehaves). Great work. Long live Perl.

Deconstruction: A Reader
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (March, 2001)
Average review score:

Deconstruction RevealedMartin McQuillan has complied groups of related essays that illuminate the often dark and mysterious topic of deconstruction. While not for the faint of heart, Deconstruction: A Reader begins with an introduction by McQuillan which is one of the best overviews of deconstuction around. Easy to read and simple to follow, McQuillan's intro leads the reader through labrynthine complexities while defining all the tricky terms as they appear. Continual references to essays within the book also make it easy to find the essay that most interests you. With the deconstructive project deciphered, a wealth of perspective knowledge is contained in the 50+ essays. Organized by field of interest -- philosophy, literature, culture, etc.. -- the effects of deconstruction can be easily examined within each section. I particularly enjoy the first section which contains essays by Freud, Marx, Heidegger and more. These snipits from larger works enlighted the reader of deconstruction's precursors -- how can you know where you are going if you don't know where you can from? The remaining sections are brilliantly framed by opening and closing remarks from the daddy of deconstruction: Derrida. While many of the essays are deeply intellectual and profound, many are accessible with the information presented in the intro, but after the easier essays are understood and internalized, the more difficult ones become available.
Overall, this reader is a great overview of the deconstructive project and it's implications. For beginners, the intro cannot be raved about enough. It is helpful in the extreme. For more advanced deconstruction theorists, the essays provide a deconstructive perspective on many issues and in many ways. For anybody that writes on or is interested in the subject, I highly recommend this "handbook."

What is deconstruction?Deconstruction has been a hot topic for many years, and everyone has been creating a buzz around 'it.' But what exactly is deconstruction? Well it's not a literary theor or a practice. It is an all encompassing word that can be replaced by any number of words that have an unequal but similar meaning: supplementarity, allegory, etc. This book provides a good introduction to the many facets of Deconstruction that allows us to think of this term and all that it encompasses. The introduction is especially good and gives a person a quick overview of the work if you know nothing about it. In addition, the essays in the book are not readily understandable at first read but is a great work to slowly meander through the paragraphs and deconstruct any meaning that you can for yourself. Enjoy!

Democracy and the Organization of Political Parties
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (March, 1981)
Average review score:

The Revival of the Major Political ConceptsSeymour Martins Lipset is the author of the preface and of this abridged edition of Moisei Ostrogorski's major and fundamental work: the two volumes set entitled "Democracy and the Organization of Political Parties", first published by Haskell House Publishers of New York in 1902. Through this fantastic work, we can understand how the political theatre is made and used not for the protection and guarantee of the people's interests, but for the political elite, the minority interests instead. Concepts like: clientelism, corruption, power image, caucus, ring, whip, dark horses... are only but some of the many examples that show how actual and important the knowledge and understanding of that work remains until today. The study and analysis pursued by Ostrogorski, the problems he was able to found and the construction he made of the British (1st Volume) and American (2nd Volume) societies and civilizations remain actual, and we can find today the repetition of the majority of the "difficult" situations that are able to exist (even) in a "democracy". Its a fundamental and prioritary author for those interested in understanding how the world goes on, and through what kind of rules... Good not only for those with interests in political science subjects, but to all citizens in general.
It was for that reason that I have been studying Ostrogorski's thought and all his work, and I have already written a book on it, which is entitled, in portuguese, "A Fórmula do Poder. Elite, Democracia, Partidos e Corrupção Política no pensamento de Moisei Ostrogorski", something which in english could be "The Power's Formula. Elite, Democracy, Political Parties and Political Corruption in Moisei Ostrogorski's Thought".

OSTROGORSKI'S "RESSURRECTION"This is one of the most interesting and realistic analysis on democracy and political parties. The author goes deep into the "real", factual functions of the social and political institutions and through his analysis he concludes that "real" and perfect democracy as well as the representativity of the majority, the people, became much compromised by the professional politician who, with the help of the caucus and bosses, he considers to be the figure that plays the most important role in society, as part of the elite which effectively have the power. Although the solution he advocates has no application nowadays as it had not in the 19th century - the ocasional parties -, the analysis seems mostly actual and real.

The Designs of William De Morgan.
Published in Hardcover by Antique Collectors Club (October, 1996)
Average review score:

Surfeit of Wm. de MorganComprehensive view of Wm. de Morgan for the interested person. It covers a huge period in English ceramic art. This book has hundreds of his pieces or designs and tells his chronology as an artist. I will not lend it out; this is the ultimate compliment.
The best book on de Morgan's extraordinary work.Published in conjunction with an exhibition of de Morgan's work at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1989, this book contains the complete collection of William de Morgan's original pottery and tile designs and drawings that was given to the museum after his death in 1917. With just about 20 pages of text of the total 256 pages, it is nearly all photographs with over 50 pages in color. De Morgan began working with William Morris in 1862, but after ten years he set up his own studio making tiles, vases, bowls and other domestic ceramics. His designs, inspired by brightly colored Middle-Eastern, Hispanic and Italian Renaissance pottery are beautiful. The forms of his vessels seem, for the most part, somewhat stilted but ocasionally they become organic enough to be satisfying to the modern eye. However his use of decoration is without equal except, perhaps, in some Hopi work. This book will be of interest to ceramic artists in particular, but any artist, art historian, or collector will enjoy it.

Diary of a Superfluous Band
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (May, 2001)

A mother's prayer...........I hope to heaven that there was a great deal of poetic license taken in telling this story. It would be too painful to read if all was true. In fact, I have been afraid to finish it. I am happy to say, that she is healthy and happy now regardless of any perceived past. Also, she is in process of writing a sequel about Molly's recovery. I look forward to its completion.
All Too RealThis book is disgustingly realistic in it's portrayal of the drunken Punk Rock underworld, Ms. Martin's life, and and what is surely the L.A. band Popdefect. The scary part is that most or all of it probably really happened. Yikes!!

Dictionary of the Later New Testament & Its Developments
Published in Hardcover by Intervarsity Press (December, 1997)
Average review score:

a must buy for all New Testament scholarsAll you wanted to know about the Acts, Hebrews, Catholic Epistles and Revelation are in this dictionary. A must buy for anybody wanting to know more about the New Testament. Together with the other three volumes, (Jesus and the Gospels; Paul and his letters; and New Testament background) it makes a very interesting dictionary on the New Testament. I found the articles on the Catholic Epistles and Textual Criticism very interesting and informative. Look out for the Old Testament series in 2002.
A Powerful Resource for Christians Everywhere! In every respect, Dictionary of the Later New Testament is a magnificent achievement in the study of early Christianity. It is both authoritative and scholarly and takes the study of early New Testament literature to a new level. I found the articles on Hebrews and Acts to be especially well written and helpful, and the book's thorough coverage of other non-canonical early church literature was refreshing. Take my word, Dictionary of the Later New Testament is a "must have" for any serious student of the Bible. I guarantee, it won't just "sit" on your bookshelf, but rather, it will become one of your most trusted resources!
